My LTO experience

If you're following me on Instagram, then you might have already seen this post.

Let me tell you about my day.

For a good while now, my whole family has been persuading me to take driving lessons. They said I'm gonna need the skill one day and that it's better for a woman to be independent and not expect her husband to drive her around all the time.  While I completely agree with their point, I just couldn't bring myself to overcome my fear of driving, which is unfounded really because it's not like I've had any bad experiences. To concretize all the persuading, my dad took me up on an offer that is too good to pass up. Long story short, I now have a student's permit under my belt.

Now onto the focus of this story.

Earlier today when I had just finished preparing all the requirements in securing a student's permit, Mon texted me to ask what time I shall be going to LTO. This was our conversation.

But looks like fate was not on my side today. I rode an FX going to LTO Manila West District Office. I've never been there so I just relied on Mon's instructions which were pretty clear. I paid the fare and specifically told Manong Driver that I'm getting off Espana across the LTO office. In Welcome Rotonda, Manong Driver suddenly turned right to Mayon Street. So "ok", I thought. Maybe he's going to take a shortcut where there's less traffic. But then we kept on going forward and forward and I started to think that something wasn't right. We weren't supposed to go straight for so long. Then I saw it. Blumentritt. Oh no! Lampas na ako! I confronted Manong Driver about it,  he apologized and even returned half of my fare. I was kinda irritated though because I didn't like the thought of having to walk under the scorching heat and wait for another FX. But what pissed me more is Manong Driver asking me in a tone that is a little too demanding, "Ano bang gagawin mo sa LTO???" Strike one.

When I finally got to the Espana office, I asked the Customer Service Counter where I can apply for a Student's Permit. She told me to proceed to Window 2 so that's where I went. In Window 2, there is a huge sign saying "Student Permits cannot be issued today due to system error." What the?! I went back to the Customer Service Counter to verify if Student Permits indeed cannot be issued today and she said, "Ay oo nga pala, walang Student Permit ngayon. Sa ibang branch na lang." Take note that I was already in a bad mood because of the incident with Manong Driver. And then this. Strike two.

So off I went to another LTO branch, which I have yet to locate by foot (again, under the scorching heat!) since the branch is in one of those not-so-accessible side streets. By the time I got to La Loma branch, I already looked like a basang sisiw. So much for being picture perfect. Strike three.

To make matters worse, picture taking was a complete disaster! Let me paint a visual for you. Imagine me not looking at the camera, my face frozen in an expression that seems to be saying "what?!", wide-eyed and surprised. And my hair...oh my hair (!!!), which I carefully straightened for the very purpose of this picture taking, is blue! Like the background! The result? I look like frikkin' Sadako! Strike four. And in the words of Venus Raj, "major, major!" talaga.

The funny thing is, when I finally got hold of my permit and saw my picture, I really felt like laughing out loud. Imbis na mainis ako, natawa talaga ako!

Anyway, for those of you who are planning to learn how to drive, the process in securing a student's permit is really easy. Just fill out a form called Application for Driver's License (you can get this form from LTO), attach a photocopy of any government-issued ID (i.e. SSS, PRC, TIN, etc.) proving your date of birth, let them take a horrible picture of you, pay the corresponding fees to the cashier, and boom. Done. :)

I have to admit that as I replay in my head everything I went through today, the things I was irritated at earlier now I find amusing. Thanks to my son who is my ultimate stress reliever!

And oh, the macchiato helped a lot too!

What about you? Tell me about your experiences with LTO in the comments section below. :)

  1. Hi! What time did you go to La Loma branch and how did you get there from espana or quezon avenue? Also, how long did it take you to get your SP? Many thanks for all the info sis! Will also blog about it once I have my sp na.. =)

    1. Hi! I was there lunchtime, arrived at around 12:30-ish. From Espana or Quezon Ave, just ride a jeep or FX. Project 6/Project 8/SM Fairview, any will do. Alight at Q. Ave across Sto. Domingo Church, cross the foot bridge then pasok ka sa Biak-na-Bato St. There's a BPI Bank at the corner so you won't miss it. LTO is located on the left side of the street, right before sa unang kanto (P. Florentino). The whole process took an hour I would say. There's a TV naman there and the waiting area is huge and airy and there are lots of seats and electric fans so you won't get bored waiting. Good luck!

  2. Hi Jen, I kind of had the same experience before. I was already in LTO Cubao to get my student license since my husband (then boyfriend) recommended that it was the most convenient LTO kasi konti lang ang tao. True naman. But they requested TIN ID pa. I had to get in BIR daw? We ended up getting my license at LTO East Ave instead. Di naman kailangan ng TIN ID, hay nako. In the end, we got what we needed and that's the most important thing :) Good luck with your driving! :)

    1. Thanks a lot! I'm about to get my non-pro driver's license na soon. Hope I get it!

TIN ID? Ang labo naman nun. Sometimes ang weird ng mga government offices, no? I got a feedback from a friend of mine na ganun din ang experience sa LTO Espana. Kapag daw after lunch, laging hindi nag-iisue ng student permit and they mask that by saying may "system error". So parang, lagi na lang may system error (???)

  3. No experience with LTO yet. I'm afraid I can't drive and will never learn kung dito lang din naman sa Manila. Haha. Traffic is horrifying and motorists here drive like crazy.

    1. I know! Kaya Manila drivers are expert drivers! If they can drive here, they can probably drive anywhere in the world. Hahaha

  4. Uy thanks for this. Coz I've been wanting to get a student's driving permits also. Hihi.. I wanna learn how to drive lalo na ngayon that I have a baby. And like you, takot din ako magdrive pero lakasan lang ng loob. Gala kami mag ina eh. Mahirap na baka tamarin si hubby mag drive atleast makakalarga kami. Must secure one soon. Buti nalang may stress reliever ka ano?

    1. Takot din ako at first pero tama yung sabi nila, sanayan lang talaga. I'm sure you'll get used to it too when the time comes! Ang sarap ng feeling ng independence pag marunong na drive. Although I still haven't gotten my non-pro yet but I will soon. For now, practice driving muna with the hubs. Kwento ka ng experience mo pag nakakuha ka na ha!

  5. I just got my student's permit too. Been itching to blog about it but it'll just be too full of rants and expletives maybe. Saka na if I feel a little better about it so it won't be too nega.

  6. Glad that you still saw the humor in a somewhat inconvenient situation! It really is better to laugh than rant when things don't go our way. ;)

    1. Well, it's better to rant first THEN laugh about it. Ang sakit lang sa loob pag hindi nailabas! Hahaha!

  7. My first LTO experience was a disaster. I was 17, still in college and went to LTO Pasay since someone told me it's just near my school. When I went there, it was offline, plus the drug testing venue was so full of people who were renewing their licenses. After that long line and I was about to take the exam, the "person in charge" (aka pwede mapakiusapan) said there was an inspection so "hindi kita matutulungan ngayon, Mam" was the line.

To cut the story short, i have to go back the following day to finish the whole process and get my license. But at least the time when I applied for student's license was less hassle since my dad was with me :))

  8. I don't drive either. Haha! I had lessons before (a long, long time ago) and had no trouble with it but I just never got around to getting my license. My hubby always says that it would be of great help to him if I learned how to drive. But, the truth is, I really have a fear of driving. I have had bad experiences with cars since childhood. So, that's my excuse. Haha! Good luck to you though!

  9. Oh my, what a day you've had! Pero bases in your story, I'm most imbyerna at what the driver said. Pakialam na nya kung anong gagawin mo sa LTO?! Haha people! I hope your day went uphill from there!

    1. Exactly what I felt! It was so embarrassing pa kasi the whole FX (which was full of passengers, by the way) heard it! After I got home, I played with my son na lang para makalimutan ko ang lahat ng cares ko in the world!

  10. Jen, I'm too chicken to drive. Especially here in Manila!

By the way, it was nice meeting you yesterday.

  11. Hi! I was only given the official receipt when I applied for a student permit since there was no stock for the card. I'm planning to apply for a non-pro license. Is the official receipt also considered as the student permit?
